Lechuguilla Cave is 203 kilometer (126.1 miles) long and 489 meter (1,604 feet) deep and is the fifth longest cave known to exist in the world and the deepest cave in the continental United States. Lechuguilla Cave is most famous among all for its rare formations, unusual geology and pristine condition. It is really a beautiful cave to see.
Agave Lechuguilla is the name of a plant which was found nearby the entrance of this cave, that’s why the cave was given the name Lechuguilla Cave. This notorious cave is located in New Mexico in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Only approved survey and exploration teams, scientific researchers and management related trips of the National Park Service are allowed to access the Lechuguilla Cave.
Till 1986 Lechuguilla Cave was known as fairly, small unimportant historic place in the backcountry of the park. Bat guano was mined for a year under the claim mining field in 1914 from the entrance passages but in small amounts. Entrance pit of the historic Lechuguilla Cave is of around 27 meter (90 feet) and known as Misery Hole which led to the passages of 122 meter (400 feet) of dry dead-end.
But since 1986 the map of 196 kilometer (122 miles) passages have been given by the explorers and also the depth was pushed to 489 meter (1,604 feet) which made Lechuguilla Cave the fifth longest cave in the world and deepest and third longest cave in the continental United States.
