What is howdah, is the question that was asked during the “Megan Wants a Millionaire” show. Well houdah or howdah is a carriage like component that is used on the back of elephant when this animal is used for riding or on some other animals occasionally as well. Elephant was used for warfare or hunting or to carry the wealthy people and to sit on it for a ride howdah was used.

The history of the usage of howdah is that it was used in the 19th century and somewhere in the 20th century as well on the back of elephant, most often for the hunting purposes but sometimes for the transportation purposes. Most often the elephants were used during the British Colonial rule over the subcontinent by the wealthy people.

But the origin and antiquity of howdah is not clear to anyone but it is made of wooden structure in shape of a large sitting place having a weight of around 750 kg. Howdah is still used in India for the Mysore festival gold carriage as this gold put on the back of the elephant and the cost the elephant may be somewhere in millions of dollar as they carries the massive golden howdah.
